Do you think there is going to be any money left in nursing when Obama reforms health care?

I am a nursing student. I am in it to help people more than for the money, but the promise of a decent salary isn’t a turn off either. Do you think there is going to be any money left in nursing when Obama reforms health care?

Yes. 30 million more people will be getting healthcare.

The stimulus provides $600,000,000 for the training of nurses, primary care physicians and doctors. The first $300,000,000 of that became available October 1st, 2009.

There will be plenty of money. Maybe! If the plan includes the ‘public option’ more people will actually have insurance, therefore more people will be able to pay their bills. If there is no public option fewer people will have insurance and medicine as a business won’t be a very viable industry. Already ER’s are closing for lack of income and more and more doctors aren’t seeing patients without insurance or cash up front. Arizona will probably opt out of paying its share of MEDICAID next year so that income flow to doctors and hospitals will stop. I have Medicare and the VA…lucky me, but a lot of people are going to either have to resort to witch doctors or join the Christian Science Church. You may be one of them!

Considering that in Massachusetts, Canada and the UK and everywhere else they’ve tried this universal health care it’s failed horribly I’ll say no. Did you know that more than 45% of doctors say they will quit if this bill passes?

Actually, I think there will be ‘plenty of work’ but I don’t think the salaries are going to be what they pay nurses today. Every time the U.S. Government has taken over a major service it has failed miserablly. Look at Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the USPS and the railroads. All of them operate in the red. All are ‘operated’ by the government.
They are talking about furnishing health care for ‘everyone’ ~ At this point, that seems to include the illegal immigrants.
I wonder what they think we have now? ANYONE can walk into an ER and get treated if he has an injury or a disease. They can be delivered of a baby or have a surgery if it is necessary. None of them pay and 90% are illegal aliens.
I imagine nurses will become as scarce as doctors are promising they will be. After researching the UK and Canadian health care options, it scares me to death.

It’s not health care, it’s “health control”…. like forcing military people to accept small pox vaccinations or the rest of us with H1N1 vaccine! Control… it’s health CONTROL, not CARE!

Maybe not the high wages that some nurses have but there will be more people seeking health care and therefore job stability will play a big role. I think it will still offer a “decent” salary but there may be a salary cap.
I am considering changing careers and going back to school for radiology or sonography.
Good luck
Freedom doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It works for most countries that have universal health care. Watch “sicko” and you’ll find that all health care systems have their issues but universal care does work if it is implemented correctly. But we all need to remember that there is nothing that works for everyone (ex: free public education). All a government can do is try its best to help the majority of its citizens, there are always those who will slip through the cracks.

As far as I’m aware nurses will be utilised much more under this reform. Doctors get paid way too much which is part of the problem. In the UK nurses are much more highly qualified and are given many more responsibilities when they work in a doctors office. The downside is we are not rewarded enough for our efforts but c’est la vie.
